Jackie's Lament

DVT colorized ultrasound imageMany of you have heard by now that Jackie is in the hospital. She developed a DVT in her right arm, just above the antecubital fossa. It has extended up the brachial vein, up to the thoracic outlet. Ultrasound characteristics indicate that it started distally and grew upward from there. She then developed one in her right leg, but I don't know the details of that.Someone else's karyotype

Since then, we have learned that her paternal grandmother died at about age 50 of a DVT. Her maternal great-grandmother also died of a DVT, but at a much greater age. Naturally, she is being tested for obscure genetic problems. So far, there isn't any known reason why this should be happening. I do know that she had immune thrombocytopenic purpura when she was 15, and that she recently was found to have hypothyroidism. The thyroid disease could be autoimmune but we don't know that yet. When she was first treated with Synthroid, she became delirious for a few weeks. That has seemed to resolve, but now she's getting depressed.

Thanks to everyone for your offers of support.

Yvonne is doing better overall. She spent some time replenishing her antique booths over the weekend. She sold sold bridle medallions at a nice profit, among other things. I am doing OK. I was trying to do my own PT on my shoulder, to avoid having to go in for regular appointments. I decided that is dumb, so I will go to a real PT next week.
